Reminder about End of Five-Week Period

This is a friendly reminder that the five-week period ends next Friday, which means that you only have until 3:00 p.m. on Friday the 18th to get any late work in. The longer it takes to turn it in, the more points you could lose, so please get all work in as soon as possible.

English 8

Today we worked on a paragraph about the Robert Frost poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" from chapter five of The Outsiders. Make sure you finish that paragraph today. The Chapter 5 assignment is due tomorrow!

English 9 and 9H

Today we worked on character webs. This will be the last item put into the 5-week marking period, so make sure to get that done and make up your missing work. The rough draft information has been posted to Schoology, and you may begin that as soon as you're finished with everything else. Don't forget that you can earn some bonus points by illustrating fairy tales!

Today we finished chapter 5 of The Outsiders. Ponyboy and Johnny have been reading Gone with the Wind and playing poker to pass the time. While looking at the sunrise one morning, Ponyboy shared the Robert Frost poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay," which is about how quickly youth and innocence can fade. Dally finally came, bringing with him a letter from Sodapop and news of the big rumble about to happen between the Socs and the Greasers. If the Greasers win, then the Socs have to leave their territory once and for all. Dally also shared that they have a spy on their side: Cherry Valance.

Today we continued to work on the fairy tale charts. Please make sure to finish the work for the second story tonight, as we're going to be working on character graphic organizers tomorrow!

Today we started to read chapter 5 of The Outsiders. Ponyboy and Johnny needed to change their appearances so that they don't match the descriptions that might be put in the newspapers, so they cut their hair and Ponyboy bleached his. Both boys are scared and uncertain, but they have supplies to get through the next week in the abandoned church.

There was no reading check-in today. Don't forget to finish your chapter 4 assignment before Monday!

English 9

Today we continued to work on the fairy tale charts. Over the weekend, please make sure to read through the second story.

English 9 Honors

Today the class broke into three breakout rooms based on villain type and continued to work on the fairy tale charts. Please read through the second fairy tale over the weekend.

Reminder about End of Five-Week Period

Hi, kiddos! This is a friendly reminder that the five-week period ends next Friday, which means that you only have until 3:00 p.m. on Friday the 18th to get any late work in. The longer it takes to turn it in, the more points you could lose, so please get all work in as soon as possible.

Outsiders homework passes were awarded today. If you turned in any of the homework assignments for chapters 1-3 after this morning, they will be counted toward your homework pass total after the chapter 4 assignment.

English 8

Today we read chapter 4 of The Outsiders, and it looks like the boys are in serious trouble now. While walking through the lot together, Johnny and Ponyboy were found and soon surrounded by five Socs, including Cherry's boyfriend and Johnny's mugger, Bob Sheldon. The Socs grabbed Ponyboy and were holding his head under the water. Johnny used his switchblade to defend himself and save Ponyboy, killing Bob in the process. Terrified of the consequences, Ponyboy and Johnny went to Buck Merrill's place to find Dally, who gave them $50, a loaded gun, and his brown leather jacket. He told them to hop on a train and go to a nearby town called Windrixville, and to hide in an old abandoned church on the top of Jay Mountain.

Today the class broke into three breakout rooms based on villain type, and you'll be spending the next few days working on filling in a shared Google Doc based on two new fairy tales. The Conquering King group will be reading "Little Snow-White" and "Cinderella," the Agent of Chaos group will be reading "Hansel and Gretel" and "Fitcher's Bird," and the Embodiment of Evil group will be reading "Little Red Cap" and "Rapunzel."

English 9 Honors

Your work was similar to English 9, but a bit more complex. Today the class broke into three breakout rooms based on villain type, and you'll be spending the next few days working on filling in a shared Google Doc based on three new fairy tales. The Conquering King group will be reading "Little Snow-White," "Cinderella," and "The Fisherman and His Wife." The Agent of Chaos group will be reading "Hansel and Gretel," "Fitcher's Bird," and "The Strange Musician." The Embodiment of Evil group will be reading "Little Red Cap," "Rapunzel," and "The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids." The third story in each group is going to be a bit of a challenge, as you might have to stretch your analytical powers to figure out how the villains and heroes fit into the categories, since they aren't all quite as obvious.

Today we talked about the difference between round and flat characters. Remember: round characters are characters that we know a lot about because the author has given us a lot of details about them, and flat characters are characters that we don't know much about.

English 9 and 9 Honors

Today we watched a couple of clips from Shrek to talk about how to identify different aspects of villains.

As a reminder to all students, the five-week marking period ends next Friday, so I will be closing my grade books next Friday at 3:00 p.m. All late work must be turned in before then, or it will remain a zero.

Here's today's recap!

English 8

We finished up chapter 3 today, and Ponyboy isn't doing very well! When he got home late (at 2 a.m. rather than midnight, when he was supposed to be home), his brothers were incredibly worried about him. Darry was especially upset because if they'd had to call the police, it could have meant that Ponyboy and Sodapop would have been sent to a boy's home (foster care) and they would have been separated. During the argument, Darry snapped at Sodapop, which upset Ponyboy, who then yelled at Darry. Without thinking, Darry slapped Ponyboy. Surprised and hurt, Ponyboy ran from the house and told Johnny that they were going to run away. Though he decided to go back, it looks like the boys might be about to get into some trouble.

Please finish your vocab and chapter 3 study guide questions. Remember, if you have all three chapter activities turned in by the end of the day today, you'll earn a free homework pass!

English 9 and 9 Honors

After the quiz on different types of villains, you began work on your Villain Planning Page. You are not to begin the story yet! Since this story is going to let me assess your skills at creating and understanding characters, I want you to choose the type of character you're going to write about. Once you've made that decision, I'll give you stories to choose from based on your character type.

Please finish your planning sheet by the end of the day on Wednesday.

Please remember that you should be checking this every day.

Today, we read the beginning of chapter three. Here, Cherry and Marcia agree to let Two-Bit, Ponyboy, and Johnny bring them home, and they're heading to get Two-Bit's car. While they're walking together, Cherry and Ponyboy discuss the idea that how the Socs and Greasers deal with feelings could be more of a separation between the two groups than money; the Socs don't let themselves feel at all, and the Greasers feel too violently. Unfortunately, Cherry's boyfriend Bob and Marcia's boyfriend Randy show up in a blue Mustang that Johnny recognizes, and Bob wears three huge rings that Ponyboy realizes might point to Bob being the one who beat Johnny so severely four months ago. The girls head out with their boyfriends, and Ponyboy falls asleep in the lot while talking to Johnny.

English 9 and 9 Honors

There will be a quiz tomorrow on the villain types, so look over the Villain Cheat Sheet!

Today we looked at the Embodiment of Evil villain, whose selfishness leads them to their villainous activities. This villain uses manipulation more than anything else, and we see that as they try to corrupt those around them, only the incorruptible hero can defeat them. This is the battle between good and evil. We read "The Singing Bone" to illustrate this.

Happy Friday! I hope you all enjoy your weekend! Here's our recap of today's classes:

English 8

We finished chapter two of The Outsiders, and we're learning that the Socs might not have it quite as easy as Ponyboy originally thought. After telling Cherry Valance about what happened to Johnny four months ago, she informed him that things are rough all over, and the Socs have problems he can't even imagine.

Your reading check-in 2 and Outsiders Chapter 2 assignments need to be turned in before the end of the day on Sunday to be considered on-time, and assignments need to be on-time in order to count toward getting free homework or reading passes!

English 9 and 9H

We moved on from the Conquering King villain to the Agent of Chaos today with our fairy tale "The Robber Bridegroom." In this gruesome tale, we see the villain who enjoys causing fear, chaos, and destruction, as well as a hero who has a streak of cruelty in her. The bride doesn't immediately turn the villain in, but rather waits (and puts others in danger by doing so) until their wedding day to denounce the bridegroom.

While there's no written homework today, please use this weekend to make up any missing work.

We had some great discussions in class today to go along with our readings. Here's our recap!

English 8

Today, we continued reading chapter 2 and made it to page 31. Ponyboy and Cherry are getting to know each other better, and Pony has just told Cherry what happened to Johnny four months ago.

Don't forget that your independent reading check-in is tomorrow!

English 9 and 9H

After our villain activity yesterday, we had three villainous types to look at. Today, we took a closer look at the first type: the Conquering King. We read the fairy tale "Little Brier-Rose" and looked at the thirteenth wise woman, who later became Maleficent in other media, as this villainous type. When it comes time to write your own fairy tales, you'll need to flesh out your villains with more of those traits and characteristics on the Villain Cheat Sheet that's been posted to Schoology.

Isn't that a cool picture?

Here's our recap of today's Wind Down Wednesday!

English 8

We watched the music video for Three Days Grace's song "Just Like You" and compared it to some of the characters and stereotypes we're finding in The Outsiders. Please finish up that assignment today!

English 9 and 9 Honors

We watched several videos today about different types of villains: the conquering king, the agent of chaos, and the embodiment of evil. We're going to use these villainous types to study the villains in our next batch of fairy tales! Please complete your villain survey tonight!
