Today we read the Iroquois creation myth. There are initially two realms. The daughter of the Great Ruler, Atahensic, is pregnant, and she begins to fall to the lower world (which is a vast ocean). Muskrat gets the oeh-da and spreads it on Turtle’s back so Atahensic can lay on it. The Bad Mind is born under his mother’s arm to cause her pain. The Good Mind, after Atahensic dies, turns her head into the sun, part of her breast into the moon, and the rest of her body into the earth. The Good Mind spends his time creating life, makes humans from the dust of the ground, and breathes life into them. The Bad Mind tries to make evil humans but makes apes instead. The Bad Mind decides that they need a battle and tries to find out what can kill his twin. The Good Mind lies and says that it’s a lotus arrow, and he knows that stag horns can kill The Bad Mind. They battle for two days and The Good Mind wins, becoming the supreme ruler of the world, while The Bad Mind is banished and becomes the Evil Spirit.
