As a reminder, the five-week marking period ends this Friday. Get all work to be before the end of the day!

Here's today's recap!

English 8

We talked a little bit today about the challenges that Anne Frank might have faced while staying in such a small hiding place with seven other people, as well as watching a virtual tour of the secret annex. Make sure you finish your journal entries today!

English 9

Today, we talked about the norms of courtly love and marriage in the 1300s, comparing them to what would be expected of Romeo and Juliet.

English 9H

Our performance studies today were on two different portrayals of Romeo in the famous balcony scene. Make sure to turn in your responses today!

As a reminder, the five-week marking period ends this Friday. Get all work to be before the end of the day!

Here's today's recap!

English 8

As we continue to read scene 3, we learn more and more about the relationships between the characters in the Secret Annex. There are some pretty significant tensions there that we'll talk more about this week!

English 9

We read through Act 2 scene 1 and began scene 2, which is the famous balcony scene. After hiding successfully from Mercutio and Benvolio, Romeo finds Juliet on her balcony declaring her love for him.

English 9 Honors

We finished scene 2, learning that Juliet's affections seem to be overwhelming her. These feelings lead her first to suggest that they take things more slowly, but then decides that she wants to marry Romeo, and she'll send word to him tomorrow.

Here's today's recap:

We began scene 3 today, in which we see that Anne is trying very hard to have fun and be friends with Peter, but Peter is often very shy, frustrated, or embarrassed. If you haven't yet turned it in, please turn in your study guide for scenes 1-2.

English 9

Your task today is to create five text message conversations, one for each scene in Act 1. These should be turned in today. If you haven't yet turned in your study guide for Act 1, please do so ASAP!

Thank you all for being so great when I was out sick yesterday. Here's today's recap!

English 8

Today, we read (most of) scene 2, where the Franks and the VanDaans got to know each other and learned what the rules will have to be as they're in hiding. Over the weekend, please finish reading that last page of scene 2 and answer the questions on the study guide, which are due by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday!

English 9

In Act 1 scene 5, Romeo and Benvolio successfully get into the Capulet party, though Tybalt spots them and is only stopped from attacking by Lord Capulet. Romeo and Juliet meet, kiss, and then learn that they belong to rival families. Don't forget to finish your study guides this weekend!

English 9H

Today was our first episode of Ye Olde Family Feud, and our Capulets seemed to lose this first round. The deck was stacked against them, however, so it's very likely that things will start to balance out in Act 2. Don't forget to turn in your study guides today if they haven't yet been turned in, and your texting assignment is due by the end of the day on Sunday!

All classes are working on plays this quarter! It's been really fun hearing all of you reading the parts out loud. Here's today's recap!

English 8

We read the beginning of scene 2 today and talked about why the authors of the play might have chosen to use a flashback the way that they did: by starting off in 1945, we can see where Mr. Frank is and our interest is high as we look back at the past and try to figure out what happened. By presenting the story as this sort of puzzle, we're looking at the story for clues. So far, the Frank family has been introduced to the VanDaan family.

English 9

Today, we watched a short video explaining the roles of women in medieval society and talked about the different roles of Lady Capulet and the Nurse, and why these two characters might have different reasons for supporting Juliet's marriage to Paris. Then, you had time to write as either Juliet or Paris to talk about what you thought of the potential marriage and what Paris might need to do to impress Juliet.

English 9H

We spent class today talking about Mercutio and his Queen Mab speech from Act 1 scene 4. Through watching different performances of that monologue, we talked about the ways that actors can show different motivations and emotions with the same speech, and how a character can be interpreted in different ways.

Here's today's recap:

English 8

Today, we began reading the play The Diary of Anne Frank. In this first scene, we meet Mr. Frank and Miep Gies, and we learn that Mr. Frank is quite upset about something. He begins to read through Anne's diary. Please make sure you're working on your study guides!

English 9

We finished scene 3, where Juliet was approached by her mother and her nurse about the possibility of marrying Paris. We talked about women's roles in the middle ages and how few choices they often had over their lives, and the different relationships Juliet has with Lady Capulet and the Nurse. Please make sure you're working on your study guides!

English 9 Honors

In scene 4, we meet Mercutio, who seems to want Romeo to cheer up just as much as Benvolio does. He doesn't believe in fate and destiny the way Romeo does, but Romeo still believes that his early death has been foretold in a dream. Please make sure you're working on your study guides!

Here's today's recap:

English 8

Today, we took a look at antisemitic propaganda used in the 1930s and in the 2000s, and we talked about how important it is to recognize these things so that we don't fall prey to them. Please work on your Journal Entry #1: Bystanders.

English 9

We finished scene 2, where Paris has approached Lord Capulet about wanting to marry his young daughter, Juliet. Lord Capulet has said that Juliet is still very young and that Paris should woo her because she needs to consent to be his wife. He suggests that Paris woo her at the party being hosted at the Capulet house, and he gives the guest list to his servant, Peter. Unfortunately, Peter is illiterate. He brings the list to someone who can read: Romeo. Benvolio convinces Romeo to come to the party with him, thinking that Romeo will find another woman there to take his mind off of Rosaline, but Romeo is only going to see Rosaline there.

Hi, kiddos. I'm sorry for missing yesterday's update, but due to my migraine, I couldn't be in front of screens. Here's our update.

English 8

Today, we read a book called The Terrible Things by Eve Bunting, which is an allegory for The Holocaust. An allegory is a story, poem, picture, etc., which has a deeper meaning, and we use allegories sometimes to explain complex ideas in a simpler way. This book is designed to explain the Holocaust and the dangers of being a bystander to children. Over the weekend, please complete the assignment on this book (it's seven questions, posted to Schoology), and any other work you may be missing.

English 9

Today, we finished Act 1, scene 1. Romeo is upset because Rosaline, who he loves, has decided to become a nun and therefore cannot be in a relationship with him.  Benvolio is determined to make him feel better. Please work on the study guide questions!

We finished up Act 1, scene 1, before moving on to the activity described for English 9 below.

English 9

Today, we looked at the fight scene in Act 1, scene 1, and your homework is to either compare it to another version of that scene in an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet OR to tell me how you would rewrite that scene. The assignment is on Schoology. Please turn this in before the end of the day.

Here's today's recap:

We continued our introduction to the Holocaust and WWII today. Please make sure you turn in today's assignment: Introduction to the Holocaust and WWII. This is the assignment with the 10 questions connected to the video and conversation from yesterday and today.

English 9

Today, we began scene 1. The Capulets and Montagues are fighting in the streets, and it seems that the violence has reached a level that the Prince is fed up with. Any additional fighting will result in execution. We'll continue this scene on Thursday. Don't forget your study guide questions!

English 9H

In addition to what we went over in English 9 (see above), we've also discovered why Romeo is so upset. We'll finish up scene 1 tomorrow before our Wind Down Wednesday activity.
