Anne is having nightmares about the Green Police, and Mr. Dussel is not exactly sympathetic. Mrs. Frank is very upset that she and Anne aren't getting along, and that Anne continues to push her away. After talking with her father, Anne is beginning to realize that she isn't being kind or fair to her mother.

The Nurse meets with Romeo to discuss the upcoming marriage, clearly telling him that he'd better not be toying with Juliet's emotions. He swears that he isn't and tells the Nurse that they'll be married at noon that very day and that he'll send his servant with a rope ladder to give to Juliet so that he can climb into her room that night. Romeo has no idea that Tybalt has sent a letter challenging him to a duel.

Today, your assignment was journal entry #3, in which I ask you to come up with a symbol for three of the characters and explain them. This is due today. Friar Lawrence doesn't seem pleased with Romeo's quickly-changing emotions, thinking that Romeo's love is in his eyes, not his heart. Still, Friar Lawrence realizes that it's possible that Romeo and Juliet may be able to end the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets with their marriage. He cautions Romeo against rushing into things, which it seems Romeo will ignore.

In the city, Mercutio and Benvolio discuss their frustration with Romeo's sudden disappearance the previous night, as well as a letter sent to the Montague house by Tybalt.

As we continue to read scene 3, we're also taking notes on the characters. Tensions are increasing in the secret annex, and now it seems that Mr. Kraler has some news for the Franks and the Van Daans.

In finishing the balcony scene, we realize how impulsive Romeo really is, and how overwhelmed by emotion Juliet seems to be. The two definitely have a challenging road ahead of them. Next, Romeo is going to seek the advice of Friar Lawrence.

We read through Act 2 scene 1 and began scene 2, which is the famous balcony scene. After hiding successfully from Mercutio and Benvolio, Romeo finds Juliet on her balcony declaring her love for him.

We finished scene 2, learning that Juliet's affections seem to be overwhelming her. These feelings lead her first to suggest that they take things more slowly, but then decides that she wants to marry Romeo, and she'll send word to him tomorrow.

In Act 1 scene 5, Romeo and Benvolio successfully get into the Capulet party, though Tybalt spots them and is only stopped from attacking by Lord Capulet. Romeo and Juliet meet, kiss, and then learn that they belong to rival families. Don't forget to finish your study guides this weekend!

Today was our first episode of Ye Olde Family Feud, and our Capulets seemed to lose this first round. The deck was stacked against them, however, so it's very likely that things will start to balance out in Act 2. We read the beginning of scene 2 today and talked about why the authors of the play might have chosen to use a flashback the way that they did: by starting off in 1945, we can see where Mr. Frank is and our interest is high as we look back at the past and try to figure out what happened. By presenting the story as this sort of puzzle, we're looking at the story for clues. So far, the Frank family has been introduced to the VanDaan family.

Today, we watched a short video explaining the roles of women in medieval society and talked about the different roles of Lady Capulet and the Nurse, and why these two characters might have different reasons for supporting Juliet's marriage to Paris. Then, you had time to write as either Juliet or Paris to talk about what you thought of the potential marriage and what Paris might need to do to impress Juliet.

We spent class today talking about Mercutio and his Queen Mab speech from Act 1 scene 4. Through watching different performances of that monologue, we talked about the ways that actors can show different motivations and emotions with the same speech, and how a character can be interpreted in different ways.

We talked about women's roles in the middle ages and how few choices they often had over their lives, and the different relationships Juliet has with Lady Capulet and the Nurse. Today, we took a look at antisemitic propaganda used in the 1930s and in the 2000s, and we talked about how important it is to recognize these things so that we don't fall prey to them. Please work on your Journal Entry #1: Bystanders.

We finished scene 2, where Paris has approached Lord Capulet about wanting to marry his young daughter, Juliet. Lord Capulet has said that Juliet is still very young and that Paris should woo her because she needs to consent to be his wife. He suggests that Paris woo her at the party being hosted at the Capulet house, and he gives the guest list to his servant, Peter. Unfortunately, Peter is illiterate. He brings the list to someone who can read: Romeo. Benvolio convinces Romeo to come to the party with him, thinking that Romeo will find another woman there to take his mind off of Rosaline, but Romeo is only going to see Rosaline there.
